What is Studienkolleg?

Studienkolleg is an institution which provides a bridge for international students to study programs in Germany. It is to prepare students to take a final exam (the Feststellungsprüfung or FSP) which grants them permission to attend a degree program in a German university. It offers courses for international students in Germany in order to prepare them for studies at a German university. They provide students with the opportunity to learn German basics or improve their intermediate German language skills. Moreover, it prepares students for university life and study structure at German universities. Studienkollegs can be public or private. The public ones are free and offer more general course topics. Private ones will have tuition fees but may be suitable for some students who need specific university courses. Some German universities may not recognize certifications from certain private Studienkollegs so be sure to check before you apply.

It becomes a very beneficial tool for newcomers who might just be starting out in Germany and wanted to take a first-hand experience in the educational system.

As you can see, German language classes are a top priority because regardless of the type of the course you will learn the German language. If your regular course is taught in English which is more likely at the postgraduate level, you will be taught the English language. Equipping you with a solid level of knowledge of a language is one of the most fundamental goals of Studienkolleg. Furthermore, language courses will count for the highest number of classes during such a course.

By the time you enter this preparatory course you have to possess a minimum level of knowledge in German or English, depending on which language you’re university course is taught. Typically, a B1 or B2 level language is required from German universities to attend a Studienkolleg. During the one-year foundation course, you’re going to use English or German language in different contexts related to your study fields, like science, business or economics, and this will significantly improve your level of language which is a vital factor to succeed in your regular studies in Germany.
